Why Ozone Therapy Is Getting Attention

Ozone hair therapy is offered by a growing number of clinics as a non-surgical scalp treatment, and many patients ask whether it can help with hair loss. The honest answer is that the scientific evidence for ozone in hair loss is limited. This page explains what is known, what is not, and what the risks are, so you can make an informed decision.

If your goal is to restore hair in areas that are already thin or bald, treatments with stronger evidence, such as medical therapy, PRP hair treatment or a hair transplant in Turkey, should be discussed first.

What Is Ozone Hair Therapy

Ozone (O3) is a reactive form of oxygen made of three oxygen atoms. In hair and scalp care, it is used in different ways depending on the clinic: applied to the scalp, used in ozonated water washes, or, in some practices, injected. In a form of systemic treatment called ozonised autohaemotherapy, a sample of the patient’s blood is mixed with ozone and given back (Riva Sanseverino et al., 1995).

Because methods, doses and devices vary widely, it is important to ask exactly which type of ozone treatment a clinic is offering.

What Ozone Therapy Can and Cannot Do for Hair

The main supported use on the scalp is as an add-on for scalp conditions rather than as a treatment for hereditary hair loss. In a 2026 randomised study of 96 patients with moderate to severe scalp seborrheic dermatitis (a flaky, oily, itchy scalp condition), adding ozone hydrotherapy to a scalp acid treatment for four weeks gave better results for redness, scaling, itching and scalp oil than the acid treatment alone (Wang et al., 2026). This study did not measure hair growth.

Claims that ozone “improves circulation”, “strengthens hair” or “encourages hair growth” are common in advertising, but we could not find good-quality studies that show these effects in people with hair loss.

What the Research Shows

A search of the medical literature finds very few human studies of ozone for hair loss. The main one is a small study from 1995 of 42 people aged 17 to 40 with androgenetic alopecia. Their hair was examined under the microscope (trichogram) before and after cycles of 16 ozonised autohaemotherapy treatments, and the authors reported an improvement in the hair cycle (Riva Sanseverino et al., 1995). This is a single, old, small study of a systemic treatment, and it does not show that scalp ozone treatments regrow hair.

In short, ozone hair therapy should be seen as an experimental or complementary scalp treatment. Be cautious of anyone who promises guaranteed regrowth from ozone.

Safety, Risks and Regulation

Ozone is not harmless. United States federal regulations describe ozone as a toxic gas with no known useful medical application in specific, adjunctive, or preventive therapy, and state that inhaling ozone can irritate the lungs enough to cause pulmonary oedema (fluid in the lungs) (21 CFR § 801.415). This is why ozone must never be inhaled and must be handled with proper medical equipment.

Injected ozone carries additional risks. A 2025 case report described a 43-year-old woman who received ozone injections in the temples and forehead to promote hair growth. Her hair loss and scarring worsened, the treated tissue was found to be scarred and poorly supplied with blood, and she needed surgery and 40 sessions of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The authors noted that ozone therapy carries serious risks, including gas embolism, and that its clinical risks may outweigh its potential benefits (McCray & Johnson-Arbor, 2025).

Having Ozone Therapy in Turkey

If you are travelling to Istanbul for a hair transplant, you may be offered extra scalp treatments during your stay. Before agreeing to any of them, ask what the treatment is meant to achieve and what evidence supports it. When you are treated abroad, check the doctor’s training and qualifications, make sure you can communicate in a language you understand, and know how aftercare will be handled once you are home (NHS, Cosmetic surgery abroad).

How the Treatment Works

The treatment should begin with a medical consultation to examine the scalp and identify the cause of the hair or scalp problem. If ozone is used, it is applied in a controlled way with medical equipment, and the doctor should explain which method is being used (topical, ozonated water, or injection) and why.

Results and Treatment Timeline

There is no established treatment schedule or expected timeline for hair results with ozone, because good-quality trials are missing. In the scalp seborrheic dermatitis study mentioned above, treatment lasted four weeks (Wang et al., 2026). For hair loss itself, ozone should not be relied on as the main treatment.

A responsible clinic will tell you plainly that the evidence for ozone in hair loss is limited, explain the risks, and never inject or let you inhale ozone without proper medical equipment and supervision.
